
Getting the Light Right in Bathroom Heaters
When we’re building infrared heaters for bathrooms—especially the ones meant for babies—we have to stop thinking about raw power. It’s not about how much heat you can pump out; it’s about how that heat actually behaves. You can’t just slap a standard halogen tube into a fixture and call it a day. That would be like putting a spotlight in a nursery. It’s way too harsh on a baby’s eyes. The goal is to keep the warmth but lose the blinding glare. Taming the glare Standard shortwave lamps are bright. Like, “squinting-your-eyes” bright. That kind of light can actually stress out the retina. To fix this, we play around with the quartz coatings and the filaments. We shift the emission peak, basically filtering out the harsh, high-frequency light. What you get instead is a soft, gentle glow. It feels right. The heat still sinks into the skin to keep you warm, but it doesn’t feel like you’re staring into a welding torch. The trade-offs Here’s the thing: you can’t have everything. These eye-safe lamps usually run at a lower wattage than the heavy-duty ones you’d see in a factory. We do this to keep the quartz surface from getting too hot. We also use R7s slip-fit connectors because they create a tight seal. No gaps, no arcing, no problems. One heads-up, though. Because of those filters, the heat doesn’t throw as far. If you’ve got a bigger room to warm up, don’t just crank up the wattage on one lamp. If you do, the temperature spikes and that harsh, bright light comes right back. Your best bet? Just add another unit. Setting it up safely Bathrooms are wet. Really wet. We build these to handle the humidity, but the seals have to be spot-on. If moisture sneaks in and hits the electrodes, the bulb is going to burn out fast. And a quick tip on the wiring: make sure your dimmer or controller is actually built for the inductive load of an infrared element. If it’s not, you’ll get that annoying flickering. Nobody wants a strobe light effect while they’re trying to relax in a bath or soothe a baby.
