
Why we put our bathroom lamps through a “steam torture test”
Bathrooms are basically torture chambers for heating elements. Between the thick steam, the sudden temperature jumps, and the constant dampness, it’s a brutal place for a lamp to live. If we just tested a lamp on a dry workbench and called it “good to go,” it would probably burn out or short circuit a few weeks after you installed it. Nobody wants that.
The problem with moisture
Here’s the thing: moisture doesn’t just sit on the outside of a lamp. It creeps. Most infrared lamps use a quartz envelope and specific electrical connections. In a steamy bathroom, water vapor finds the tiniest gaps in the seals or eats away at the insulation around the terminals. Once that moisture hits the electrical contacts? You get oxidation. Then comes the flickering, the premature failure, or—in the worst case—a tripped breaker that leaves you in the dark.
How we break things on purpose
We don’t guess if a lamp will last. We try to kill it in the lab first. We use something called “damp-heat aging tests.” Basically, we lock the lamps in a chamber that’s hot, humid, and miserable for days on end. It mimics years of bathroom steam in a fraction of the time. We’re looking for leaks, cloudy glass, or any sign of corrosion. If even 2% of a batch fails these tests, we scrap the whole lot. We go back to the drawing board and fix the sealing process before a single lamp leaves the warehouse.
The trade-off
Does this slow us down? Yeah, it does. Strict aging tests mean longer lead times because you can’t rush a “soak.” But it beats the nightmare of a massive product recall. We’d rather wait a few extra days in the factory than have your lamp die the first time you take a hot shower.
A quick reality check
Now, a word of advice: even the best lamp can’t save a bad fixture. Our lamps can handle the heat and the humidity, but they still need a decent home. If you put a high-grade lamp into a cheap, leaky housing that isn’t rated for water, it’s still going to fail. Make sure your fixture’s seal is as tough as the lamp inside it. That’s the only way to make sure it actually lasts.
